  • So Many Thoughts

My boyfriend and I were together from July up until last week. We were serious about each other and we care for each other very deeply still. My mom forced us to break up and its been killing both of us. My mom has threatened to tell him he can never speak to me or see me ever again :'( I've been so frustrated because I don't know what to do! > Part of me just wants to leave and take off with him, but then the other part just wants things to get better around here. I don't want to break off any contact with him because that would make this whole thing so much worse. The heartache I'm feeling right now is just painful and I wish I could make my family listen to me and really hear me, but they won't. They are too set in their own judgements and opinions. I just don't want to end up doing something stupid that I'm going to regret. Please help me!

    Re: So Many Thoughts

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Switchboard. It sounds like you are going through a very difficult time and we are glad that you reached out to us. We are a non-directive hotline so we can’t give you advice or tell you what to do but we can explain what options you have available to you.

You said that your mom forced you to break up with your boyfriend and I’m sorry to hear that. What was going on that she forced you to do so? It sounds like you’ve tried talking to your family about how you are feeling but you said they are to set in their ways. What kinds of things do they judge your boyfriend about? You also said that you would like for things to work out at home. What kinds of things have you tried with your family? Here at the National Runaway Switchboard, we can help you make a conference call with one of your parents. We would mediate the call and only become involved if the call became unproductive (i.e. fighting). Another thing that you may be able to try is a family contract or negotiation. You may be able to reach an agreement with your family about your boyfriend and the time that you spend with him.

I’m glad to hear that you and your boyfriend are very committed to each other. How long have you been dating each other? You also stated that you don’t want to break contact off with him; how often do you get to see or talk to him?

I’m sorry to hear about your heartache. It can be a very painful thing to have to end a relationship with someone that you care about. If you would like to talk to someone about how you are feeling, please contact us here. We are a completely confidential and anonymous hotline that is available 24 hours a day. We can be reached at 1-800-RUNAWAY. We look forward to hearing from you!
