  • I am sick of everything in my life and i just want to run away!

Ok im 13 and well i have bad relationships with my family and friends! All my life i have never had anyone there for me. Every friend i have ever had always lied to my face by saying they will always be there for me, then next thing i know they leave me all alone. And all those friends that left me were my so called best friends. It happened to me more times than i can count. It is still happening to me. Those so called best friends were the only friends i had. Then my family always is treating me like crap everyday! They say im fat, stupid, a dumbass, etc! All those words ane everything they say to me hurts me on the inside more than ever. No one understands me except for my best friends i have now but they are acting the same way towards me as my old friends did before they left me alone, so i dont expect them to be my friends much longer. The point im trying to say is my life sucks, no one knows what i have been through, and how much pain i am in! So i have thought about running away to get away from everything. I have thouroughly planned this out to the smallest detail pratically. I would go to new york city that way it would be hard to find me because the city is so big. But i wanted to know would i be able like change my name, and my identity?? Because i was going to run away forever, then i thought if i changed my name would i be able to get a license when i was older?? And if i just went off the grid and lived on the streets would i be able to live without my parents finding me?? I know how to fight and i have seen alot of movies so i know how to lay low and avoid police. I also got a plan for money and where to live but those were just a few questions i had about it.

    Hey there,

Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safe line for support, seems like you are going through a very tough time right now and we are going to try and help you as best as we can. You don’t deserve to be treated or talked about that way. Seems as if you and your family don’t have a good relationship. You said that you and your friends aren’t exactly dong to well, either, which can be difficult.

We aren’t legal experts but some general information we can give you is: running away isn’t a criminal offense which means that you typically wouldn’t go to jail for running away. If you were to run away, your parent(s) have the option of filing a runaway report. A runaway report is just a notification to the authorities that they didn’t give you permission to leave. This means that if you were to run away and you were picked by the police, for whatever reason, they would just return you home to your parents. Another thing you should be aware of is, if you were to leave and you were to stay with an adult, the adult that you are staying with could face criminal charges, which varies from state to state. An option you have to get more information on these laws and procedures, you could definitely reach out to your local police department by calling their non-emergency number and asking some anonymous, general questions. Somethings you could always think about when contemplating running away is:

    • Where would I live? Is it safe?
    • How would I get food? Clothes? Hygiene products?
    • Am I going to continue school? If so, how will I do that?
    • How would my parents react?

We also want to remind you that we are here to listen and to help you in the best way that we can. Our number is 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) and our lines are open 24/7. We also have a live chat program that is open every day from 4:30 PM to 11:30 PM CST. We wish you the best of luck and hope to hear from you soon

    Stay strong,

    NRS
