  • Brother needs to leave home

Hello my girlfriends brother is 17 and half and lives at home with his mom and dad they seem to have lot of issues and unhealthy behavior. His sister and I own our home and are very we'll off and are willing to let her brother move here to get out of a bad situation, we are from Pa and wondering if we helped him out of the house if we would get in trouble?

Re: Brother needs to leave home

    Hi there,

Thank you for reaching out to us here at National Runaway Safeline. We are here to help you out the best that we can.

So it sounds like your girlfriend’s brother has been having a hard time at home and we are sorry to hear about this. It has got to be a tough situation to be in, but it is really good to hear that he has got a good support system with you and your girlfriend.

So we are not legal experts here, but we can share with you the information that we do have. Running away is not a criminal offense, it is a status offense which is most similar to a parking ticket. However, anyone that he stays with could potentially be charged for harboring a runaway. If he decides to leave home without his guardian’s consent, they would have the right to make a runaway report. If they decided to make a report, and the police found him, they would return him back home.

The laws differ state by state, even by the specific serving police department within the state, so we cannot say for sure what would happen in your specific situation. One option we like to remind individuals of is calling their local nonemergency police department and asking any questions hypothetically.

We are here 24/7, and our hotline at 1800runaway is anonymous and confidential. You can call us any time, and you can pass our information along to your girlfriend’s brother as well-we are here to listen and help the best we can. You can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat which is open every day from 4:30p to 11:30p CST and can be accessed here:
