Re: What happens if I runaway

    Hi there,

Thanks for reaching out. We are here to help you out the best that we can.

So it sounds like you have been thinking about coming out to your parents. This is a really big and brave step and it is good to hear that you are feeling ready to take it. It is an admirable thing to come out to people when you are not entirely sure of what their reaction will be, and to feel secure enough in yourself and identity to do so.
You said that if they do not accept you, then you will run away. We do not give advice here, so we are not going to tell you what to do one way or another. You know your situation better than we do, and better than anyone else for that matter. What we are going to do, though, is try our best to keep you safe in whatever decision you make. With that being said, there are a few questions that can be helpful when thinking about running away from home:

What else can I do to improve my home situation before I leave?
    How will I survive?
Who can I count on to help me?
    What are my other options?
If I end up in trouble, who will I call?

Someone is always here at National Runaway Safeline, we are a 24/7, anonymous and confidential crisis line for at risk, homeless and runaway youth. We have a large database here of different resources like shelters, counseling, etc. If you run away, do you have a place in mind that you would go to, either with family or friends? If not, we can try to locate the nearest age appropriate shelter for you.

If you are hesitant to talk to your parents alone, we offer conference calling here. If you were to call into 1 800 runaway, we could make a call out to a guardian(s) to facilitate the conversation, to make sure that you are being heard in what you want to communicate.

If you want to talk more about possibilities or options, please call us at 1 800 runaway (786 2929). We also have a chat option available from 4:30pm to 11:30pm CST through our website, 1800runaway.org.
We're here to support you in any way that we can.

    Good luck and stay safe,
    NRS

Re: What happens if I runaway

        Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us. We’re sorry to hear that you feel like you need to leave home and start over, it sounds like whatever is going on at home has made it really difficult for you to want to stay where you are. We won't tell you what to do, but we’ll do our best to provide you information that might help you make a decision.

From your post, it sounds like you feel like leaving home will let you start over. Leaving home is a big deal, and hopefully you’ve given some thought to whether whatever is going on at home can be fixed before you decide to leave. If you do choose to leave home, we hope that you’ve considered where you might go, how you’ll support yourself, who you might turn to if you get into trouble, as well as how you’d keep yourself safe while you were on your own. There’s a lot to consider when you think about leaving home. We won’t tell you what to do, but we do want you to be as safe as possible regardless of what you decide to do.

If you'd like to talk to someone about your options, feel free to give us a call. We can talk to you about finding a safe place to stay, who you might feel comfortable reaching out to for support, as well as possible ways to approach your legal guardians if something at home needs to be addressed. If you don’t have that information, reach out to us by phone or chat and we will gladly help you find what you need to help you stay safe.

We’re glad that you reached out to us. It sounds like you’ve been having a really tough time and now want to start over somewhere else. Remember that we are available by phone 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786.2929), as well as by chat every day from 4:30pm – 11:30pm CST. Feel free to reach out if you’d like to know more about resources in your area, or if you just need to talk to someone. We’re here for you. Best of luck to you.
