  • i want to run away with my boyfriend

Im 18 years old. Im muslim. My parents are extremely strict but ive been dating a black boy for 5 years now. He means the world to me. When i was in trouble, when i had suicidal thoughts he never left my side. When my family wasnt there for me he was. I cant even imagine a life wihout him now. My parenta forcibly got me engaged to a 29 year old and want me to get married soon. They will neevr accept my boyfriend. They dont let me see him or talk to him. I cry myself to sleep every night. I feel like killing myself. My boyfried said he cant take to see me this way any longer and wants me to leave and move in with him. Hes 19. He can support me. Im just afraid of what my family will go through , or how theyd react. I dont want my family to break because of me. I dont know what to do anymore. Im in college. My bf is in a university. We are going to continue our education, he supports me in every way and his famil accepts me. I dont know what to do , who to talk to.

RE: i want to run away with my boyfriend

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to us for help and sharing your story. This sounds like a really tough situation. You said that you would like to run away with your boyfriend because your parents are pressuring you to enter an arranged marriage. That must be really scary. You mentioned that you are considering suicide. If you feel like you are going to hurt yourself, the National Suicide Hotline might be a really good resource for you. You can call them at 1-800-273-TALK (8255) for support and help. It is understandable that you are distressed and upset by your situation, but you should know that there is help out there for you and you do not need to hurt yourself to escape this situation. You might also think about reaching out to a counselor or health services at your college. We are here to listen and support you however we can, and you can contact us any time for support or to talk about options.

It is good to hear that you have the support of your boyfriend. Since you are 18, you are considered a legal adult in the US, which means that you have no legal obligation to be obedient to your parents. If you want to live with your boyfriend, they cannot legally stop you. It sounds like you are primarily concerned with how this action will effect your relationship with your family. It must be really hurtful that they won’t accept your choices. You said that this has lead you to have suicidal thoughts. Since our primary concern is your safety and wellbeing, we understand that you are faced with making a difficult decision in order to preserve your life and health. If you need someone to talk to about this, we are available 24/7 at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). All of our services are completely anonymous and confidential. It takes a lot of strength to reach out for help. We are looking forward to hearing from you soon, and wish you the best of luck.
