My girlfriend and I are both 18, and she wants to run away from home to go to some guy's house that she met on the internet. She have very low self esteem and she thinks that she only makes everyone else around her stressed and unhappy. She wants me to break up with her so she can run away and it won't affect me, even though I've told her it doesn't work that way. She seems to have it planned that this guy will pick her up somewhere on some date, but only if we break up. She doesn't have her driver's license and I'm worried that this guy is just luring her into a trap. Please help, it's an urgent matter of the utmost importance.

RE: 18 year old girlfriend wants to run away
Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out tonight and sharing your story with us. It sounds like you and your girlfriend are going through a lot right now. It was smart of you to reach out and get some guidance through all of this. So let's see how we can help you out.
It sounds like you've thought a lot about this and seems like you're thinking through what his intentions might be. Sometimes when people want to run away there are issues that are going on at home. You mentioned that your girlfriend has low self esteem. It might be important to think about the reasons she is feeling so low so that those issues can be addressed. Can you think of supports that she or you might be able to reach out to? Connecting her with supports around her might be a way to prevent her from leaving.
Unfortunately because she is 18, she is allowed to live with whoever she wants. It sounds like it hurts you that she wants to leave. That's understandable. If you would like to talk more about what's going on or want to talk through more options, please feel free to call us 24 hours a day at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). If you can't call in, you can chat with us through our website (www.1800runaway.org) from 4.30pm-11.30pm Central Time. We look forward to your call or chat.
Best of luck to you,
NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
