  • My future

I'm 17 going to be 18 in February. My boyfriend just turned 18 a week ago. We have been dating a little over 3 months but have been bestfriends since our freshman year of highschool. Our "first time" wasn't with each other. And we we first did it it actually felt like it ment something other than just sex. He works and I work. We've been talking about saving up money to move in with eachother after we graduate this year. There's only a few problems... His mom has already said we're not moving in together unless we're married. And then the other problem is breaking the news to my parents. I'm the youngest of 3. My oldest sister has a child and isn't married and my other sister is away at college. My parents tend to keep me on a "tight chain"... I have a strict cerfew and i don't get to see my boyfriend a whole lot. I don't know how to tell them I'm moving out... Or when to even tell them I'm moving out... I'm scared they'll flip out and lock me in my room and never let me see daylight.. (Not that drastic but you get what I'm saying) what should I do? Any advice on how to tell them I'm moving out or how to gain their trust?

    Re: My future

    Hello there,

We’re glad you decided to reach out to us at the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you’re having some problems maintaining your relationship with your boyfriend. You mentioned your parents keep you on a tight chain and are talking about moving in with each other after you graduate this year. We are not here to tell you which decision to make including whether to move out or not, but are here to discuss options.

You shared your boyfriend is already 18 and your birthday is in February so it seems as though you will both be 18 by the time you graduate this year. At 18, leaving home is sometimes more about having a solid plan for how you’ll support yourselves and meet your basic needs of food, housing, etc. You already stated you and your boyfriend both work and if you aren’t planning on leaving until after graduation it sounds like you’ve got some time to figure things out. We would be happy to continue discussing possible options with you. You are encouraged to contact us directly either through our Live Chat which is open every day from 4:30 to 11:30pm CST. Simply click on the big “Live Chat” button on our homepage. Or if that doesn’t work, we have our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929).

    Good luck!
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
