Me and my girlfriend have been together for almost 1 year and we have fallen deeply in love. She wants to move in with me but her parents dont even know about me because they dont approve. The only reason why i dont want to wait until she turns 17 (AOC in texas) is because her mother is so verbally abusive to her. And her dad is gone all the time and my girlfriend is scared to tell him. I am so tired of getting phone calls from her telling me that her mom made her cry. I dont know what to do. At first the idea of her running away with me was crazy but i started to get tired of her mom making her cry all the time so the idea started sounding like a good one. But i used to work for the texas department of criminal justice system and i found out you can get 20 years for that. Im just so sick of her mom but i cant do anything about it cause i dont want my girgirlfriend to have to move away...so my question is if she runs away with me what are the chances of the police coming to my door steps and taking me to prison.

RE: im 18 and my girlfriend is 16
Hi there,
Thanks for contacting us tonight. It seems like you’re in a tough situation right now. It’s clear that you really care for your girlfriend though. She’s lucky to have someone like you to advocate for her!
It is very difficult for us to answer your question. We are not legal experts, so we can really only speak generally as to what might happen. You are right that her legal guardians would have the right to charge you with something called “harboring a runaway”. We can’t speak specifically to the consequences of that. And the same goes for the chances. If you’d like something for specific you can always contact your local police department through their non emergency number. You can find that number just by searching for it online.
If you or your girlfriend would like to talk through other options, feel free to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929). We are here 24/7 and are completely confidential and anonymous. If calling isn’t your thing you can chat with us through our website (www.1800runaway.org) from 4.30pm-11.30pm CST.
Best of luck to you,
NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
