Thank you for reaching out to us and sharing all of the details of your very difficult situation. Sounds like you and your family love and miss your brother dearly and just want him to be safe and secure. He’s lucky to have someone like you reaching out. Seriously.

Sounds like your brother has made a pretty huge decision based off of personal frustrations and difficulties at home. The relationship with him and his parents sounds like something he is trying to gain independence from-and you’re left to worry about him on top of everything else. Sounds like you and your brother have a pretty good relationship. Do you think he would continue to discuss and explain things over the internet?

It seems like your brother is fairly determined to do what he wants to do and stay away from home. Legally, when folks turn 18 they have the right to be out of the home and at that point, become their own legal guardian, however, that now means that he is responsible for himself including any legal matter that might be pending. So you are correct in saying that he probably should tend to his probation before he does anything else because as an adult, if you neglect court dates (etc), things will only get worse.

I hope that answers most of your questions. Sounds like all you want is for him to be safe and have security with life, money, etc but he has to want that for himself first.
Again, we’re glad you decided to contact us. If you or your brother need any more resources or need to talk about things some more, please contact us 24hrs a day at 1800-RUNAWAY.

    Best of luck,

Just turned 18 year old brother ran away

    Hello and good afternoon,

My brother just turned 18 on the 15th of October. He ran away from home On saturday morning. He got into an arguement with my dad. A very silly arguement. and he left home. HE has not been home since. He has not called only left a message on myspace saying he's safe but will not be coming back and won't disclose where he is. His best of friends are just as worried and even upset with him because my mom will not stop crying. His girlfriend has not heard a single thing. (which we find strange as well). I knew deep down he'd do this someday. He always threatned us he'd leave. He hates disciplined. He never really wanted to live at home. He's always wanted to pursue this bohemian "rockstar life". I'm just frustrated and upset because he is currently on probation. HE doesn't have a job or go to school. He does not have a single dime on him. Should'nt he reach his probation officer? Is he even allowed to run away? his sentence isnt over for another 2 years. HE's never done anything like drugs or alcohol. He got into trouble with the law over something his friends had put blame on him for. We're all so worried. BOth my parents are disabled and extremely sick and I just can't see them like this. What are our rights? We don't want to call the police because we're afraid they will arrest him for leaving home while being on probation. What can I do? How can I find out where he is. I'm just so worried about him. I know he's 18 and if he wants to leave home, I guess he's entitled too. I just don't get it. We're all so closeknit. I just want to know what his rights and our rights are. and if you would know whether or not he'd go to jail for leaving home even though he's already 18. Thank you so much and I think your website is wonderful.
