  • im almost 18 and i want to move out

I'm almost 18 and I live in florida and I want to move out I have a plan I haven't told my mom because she will just try and stop me I have a plan and I have somewhere to go. but I'm afraid while I'm moving my stuff she might try something I'm wondering can she can she stop me from leaving on my 18th birthday because I really don't want to have to go to the extent of calling the cops and having the cops keep her back while I get my stuff out of the house. but I'm also afraid she might try and have the person helping me arrested for kidnaping . can she do any of that? if so what should I do?

Thank you for taking the time to write us here at NRS. We want you to know that we are here as support to help you with figuring out your next steps in this difficult situation.

The good news is that once you turn 18 you are considered a legal adult. This means you will have the legal freedom to choose where you live. If your mom does attempt to involve police, you can let them know you are 18 and you are leaving willingly. They will not force you to stay at home with your mom and as long as you are leaving at your own will police would have no reason to pursue kidnapping charges. Although it was a smart idea to think of having a police escort present when you leave. If you believe your mom might attempt to prevent you from leaving or doing something to threaten your safety, you can try to call the non-emergency number for your local police department to ask for an officer's assistance.

It might be helpful to come up with a safety plan since this does sound like a tough situation. If you have access to them, it would be a good idea to obtain your vital documents before you leave such as your ID, birth certificate, and social security card. Sometimes it is beneficial to move things out in steps. So instead of packing up everything the day you plan on leaving, you can gradually take belongings to a safe place over time without your mom noticing. This way you can have everything that is necessary and important moved out already in case your mom tries to prevent you from leaving or packing on your 18th birthday.
