  • Son keeps running away

Hi, my 15 year old son ran away because we were going to move. Last month, I revealed to him we were moving because he was getting C’s in a couple of classes. We know this looks bad on his transcript and we want our son to have a bright future so we were going to move him to an easier school so he could have a higher ranking. He explained to me he has many friends here and he loves living here. He talks to friends a lot and he says I will ruin his social life and happiness if we move because of schools. I just want him to go to a good college and have a good job in the future. When moving day came, he was gone and then he returned later that evening so we couldn’t move that day. He stopped talking to me and hasn’t spoken a word in 2 weeks. Now everyday he comes home from school he sleeps until 10 PM and then does his work. I rescheduled moving day to the next week and I told him last night and he hasn’t said a word yet. I am afraid he will run away again.

    Hello,
Thank you for writing to us here at the National Runaway Safeline.

We understand it takes great courage to reach out, and we appreciate you sharing a little bit about what’s going on. Often moving transitions can feel awkward so we understand that it has not been easy for him and you.it sounds like he is comfortable at his school and does not seem to want the change. The two of you are not on speaking terms by his choice and you seem fearful that he might run away again.
The situation must be frustrating for you both. We’re glad you reached out.

It is times like these that it might be have some comfort to have a listening ear.
We would like to be of assistance to you if we can.
Sometimes it can be helpful to talk with someone about your feelings for the situation.
We want you to know that we are here as support to help you as well as your son through this challenging time. We can best help by phone or chat so that we might learn a little more about your situation and how we might assist you. If you would like to talk more in detail and share more about how we can help specifically, we would be glad to listen and perhaps explore some options with you. Please call or chat soon.
