First off, we're thankful your friend has you looking out for him and supporting him. It sounds like he's in a stressful situation, and regardless of the outcome, having an ally for emotional support in you will be hugely helpful to him.

We are not legal experts, and the way that truancy laws are enforced varies from state-to-state, and even county-to-county. If his dad is his sole legal guardian, it is possible he would be returned home to stay with him. If he is experiencing abuse at home, it could be meaningful for him to share that at his court appearance. As far as the "best reason" for him to miss school, it could be beneficial to be direct and honest about why he missed school; that could lead to them finding solutions to the obstacles he encountered getting to school.

Living at a home where you don't feel safe can make everything else in life harder; if your friend wishes to, it could be beneficial for him to contact us to talk more about his situation. We are available 24/7 by phone at 1-800-786-2929 or text chat at 1800runaway.org.

    truent and runaway
My friends 16 and ran away from his dad who called him in and now is filed as a runaway. He hasn’t been to school at all since last school year, and has a truency court date tomorrow. He’s concerned that they might take him at this court and place him back at his dads, would they? Also, what is the best reason for him missing school since he wasn’t in the district to ride a bus, and didn’t feel safe going to another school in case he gets found. He’s super nervous and doesn’t know what to expect, so i’m trying to get some tips for him. thank you.

    RE: Truant and runaway

    Hello There!

Thanks for contacting us at National Runaway Safeline. It is a great first step in finding the help and information that you may need. You mentioned that you are trying to find help for your granddaughter. It is such a great thing that you are trying your best to support her. It is awesome that she has someone like you in her corner.
We are not legal experts here, but typically running away and truancy are not considered crimes. They are what is called status offenses. The both are something that tee status can change. Changing the status of truancy, you may want to talk with the school of what steps she would need to take next to do so. Regarding running away, if her parents or guardians have gotten the police involved to file a runaway report, they are required to locate and return the youth home to safety.
If you would like to talk more about this situation and how you are hoping you could help, please call us at 1800-RUNAWAY or live chat with us.

    Best Wishes,
    NRS

Truant runaway, can parents be fined

    Hello,

Thanks for contacting the National Runaway Safeline.

That’s an interesting question but one we are uncertain of.
You might consider contacting your local police department non- emergency number for this type of information. You might also check with to your child’s school.
There may be a truant officer assigned to your child’s school district.

    We hope this helps.

    Good Luck,
    NRS
