My sister's boyfriend does not want to go to Texas with his parents after high school. He told them how he felt and that he wants to stay in Colorado and go to college and work. After graduation in May he won't be 18 till about six months; but can his parents absolutely make him go to Texas? And if they do, once he turns 18, he can leave, right?

Thanks for reaching out to us here at the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like your sister’s boyfriend is in a tough spot but we are really glad that you have contacted us for some help. We’re here to support you in any way that we can.

It sounds like your sister’s boyfriend wants to stay in Colorado to go to college and work after he graduates, but he won’t be 18 at that point. We’re not legal experts here, but generally speaking in most states, the legal age of an adult is 18 which means that you’re still a minor before this age. Minors need to be under the care of a legal guardian, which it sounds like his parents are legal guardians. If he lives elsewhere without their permission, they have the right to make a runaway report. Running away is not illegal, it’s a status offense which just means if the police find you, they bring you back home.

You asked if he can return to Colorado once he turns 18. As long as he is recognized as a legal adult in his state, (usually the age of 18 ) then he has the right to decide where he lives.
