    Re: Running away in MN

    Hi,

We appreciate you contacting NRS about your situation however it is with our regret that we do not have the legal expertise to give you an exact answer to your question. When someone is reported as a runaway the police can detain them and seek to return the runaway youth to their guardian.
You stated you would like to live with your mom.
Have you had any discussions with her that pertain to the custody agreement?
This may be a question more in line for Family Court services in your area.
What do you think your mom would say about going to family court for a custody amendment?
It sounds like you may be having a tough time coping with your living arrangements.
How long will it be until you are 18 years of age? We hope things can reach a point of satisfation for you. We hope that you have a system of support from family and friends.
Please feel free to contact NRS if you would like to talk more about your situation.
We would welcome you calling our 1-800-Runaway 24hr hotline for referral information on this subject.

    Take care,
    NRS

Hello and thanks for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. We are glad that you found us online, especially if you are uncomfortable calling. It sounds like things are really hard at home right now. It can be so difficult to live with parents who are fighting and we can only imagine how upsetting it can be when there is yelling and hitting involved. Have you ever told anyone about how your dad hits your mom when he is angry? You are very brave for sharing what you are going through and we want you to know that you are not alone. Do either of your parents ever hit you when there is fighting?

No one deserves to live in a home that is unsafe. If you ever feel unsafe, you can always call 9-1-1. You can also talk to a trusted teacher or counselor about what is going on. You mentioned that you didn’t feel safe calling, but we are also available via live chat from 4:30-11:30pm CST at 1800runaway.org. We hope you will follow up with us so that we can help you discuss some places you might be able to go to feel safer. Hoping to hear from you,

        -NRS
