Re: how can i work without my parent finding out?

Thank you for contacting us at the National Runaway Switchboard. We are glad to hear you’re safe and although we are not sure of your exact situation, we imagine it’s pretty tough right now. We will do our best to answer your questions as generally as possible since we are not legal experts. It sounds like you are pretty set on emancipation. We have very basic information on this subject divided by state. We are not sure how much research you have done already, so we have listed the most common requirements for states offering emancipation statutes:

    - Be at least 16 years of age
    - Living separate/apart from parent(s)/guardian(s) with their permission/acquiescence
    - Have a legal source of income/ financial stability
    - Be in school or have a GED
    - Judge rules emancipation in your best interest

If you’d like to share your city and state we try and find local contact information for you. As far as school transcripts, there is something called the McKinney Vento Act which helps homeless youth enroll in school. Here is their website, http://www.seirtec.org/nche/m-v.php, where you can look up National, State, and local resources.

As far as work goes, the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) does not require work permits, although some states do, according to the U.S. Department of Labor. Here is a link to frequently asked questions on their website which can hopefully answer more of your questions. http://webapps.dol.gov/dolfaq/dolfaqbyt ... topicID=14

We encourage you to contact us at 1-800-RUNAWAY if you have any additional questions or anything else you’d like to discuss. We are anonymous, confidential, and available 24/7. Best of luck to you!

Re: how can i work without my parent finding out?

Thanks for your words. I have gotton a lot of help=from lots of legal advocates..
Q:If the guy that got custody of me lied to do that isn't really my father and I found out who was (dna a test and all) kept me from having relationships with my real family for years is abusive to me and a drug addict , what can I do legally???
I think running from that situation was the best thing for me. CPS wasn't doing anything for me, my school couselor wasn't doing anything but telling me I was being abused and that their school was afraid he would sue them. .I didn't trust the couselors I was seeing because they were talking to my parents and then he and step mom would get mad at me ,then I would get hit, threathend and shoved around and things thrown at me-if I talked about what was going on at home. I have a long road ahead of me. Lots of counseling, i am told so i can learn that being abused wasn't my fault . (for years I have always blamed myself for their behavior)

I left and i am not depressed anymore. sure i miss my friends, but my closest friends knew what was going on and told me I should get out cause it was a screwing me up/.

Re: how can i work without my parent finding out?

Thanks for getting back in touch with the National Runaway Switchboard. It sounds like you have done a very courageous thing by getting away from an abusive environment. We hope that you are safe and continue to remain in a safe environment.

Finding out that you have another family and the identity of your biological father must be some very exciting and profound news. Have you been able to make contact with your biological father or family?

It’s unfortunate that you were lied to about your father and was kept from having a relationship with your family for years. It may be best to contact a family law attorney to find out what your rights are and what can be done legally. United Way is a social service referral agency and can be contacted by dialing 211. You can also give us at call, toll-free at 1-800-RUNAWAY, to discuss options, legal and counseling referrals.

And you should know that you are not to blame for being abused. You didn’t deserve to be abused and no one has the right to abuse to you.

We hope the information provided was helpful. We want you to remember that you can always contact us toll free at 1-800-RUNAWAY. Our hotline is confidential and anonymous and is available 24 hours and 7 days a week.

We wish you the best of luck!
