  • i need help with a friend

my friend ran away on sunday. i'm extremely worried about her. she's suicidal. i haven't heard from her since sunday night. how should i help her? she lives with her aunt and uncle. her aunt told me that she doesn't care if she ran away and that i shouldn't either. can i call the police and report my friend missing even though i'm only a minor? can the police do something about her aunt not caring about her?

Re: i need help with a friend

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out and sharing your story with us. You friend is really lucky to have someone like you looking out for her right now in this time of need. I'm not sure what will happen if you call the local police department but if you get ahold of the right person, they might get curious and investigate what is going on. One thing you can do is file an abuse/neglect report with Children's Protective Services (CPS) and let them know what's going on. Anyone can file those. Let us know where you are and we can get you those numbers to call.

Do you know where your frined is now? Do you think she would want to go to a safe place if you gave her numbers to shelters/suicide hotlines?

If you can get us what city and state your friend is in, we can find those shelters as well but for now, here is the National Suicide Hotline 1.800.273.TALK

Again, it's great someone as proactive as yourself is looking out for her. Please keep contact with us here if you are able and best of luck. Hope to hear from you soon.

Re: i need help with a friend

        Hello,

Thank you for following up with us on behalf of your friend and letting us know that she has returned home. You did a good thing by offering her our number and we look forward to hearing from her when she is ready to give us a call. In the mean time, we hope that you are taking care of yourself also and imagine that it is a tough time for you as well. One reminder for you is to also offer the National Suicide Hotline number at 1800-273-Talk since she is having those thoughts. If you want to continue offering your support, one thing to look out for, if you are around her, is the warning signs such as depression and isolation and keep on listening because it is one way to reassure her that you care and love her. You also stated that her aunt did not care if she ran away. Is it possbile that the aunt might sign her into a shelter? At a shelter, she could recieve counseling for the issues she is facing currently. We have a database of shelters and she is welcome to call to access shelters if they are available in her area. Maybe this is one way to cool off away from home for some time and get some clinical attention in the mean time. Your desire to help a friend in need is to be commended. Gook luck.
