Hello, I'm 17 and moving to Illinois from California to (1) escape my abusive mother and (2) live with my boyfriend and his mom. I've already thought out majority of it, my only remaining question would be this. About how much will the police search for me? My brother ran away from my mom at 17 as well, and when she called the police, they didn't do anything. However, I have a record of mental illness, as well as a few trips to hospitals and psych facilities. Will this make them look for me even more?

Hello,
Thank you for reaching out to NRS. It’s good that you’re making plans before you leave, and that you have a support system with your boyfriend and his mom! Unfortunately we can’t answer this question as it really depends on the police in your area. The fact that your brother ran away and they didn’t do much indicates that they might not look too hard, and if your mom has ever been reported for abuse or domestic disturbances, they might take that into consideration as well when deciding how hard to look. Our ability to respond over the forums is limited, so if you would like to contact us further, please call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY or live chat with us at our website, 1800runaway.org. We are available 24/7 if you have any other questions.
We hope you stay safe and that we hear from you soon,
NRS Staff
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

Hi, thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. It's very brave of you to share your experience with NRS, and NRS is sorry to hear about the abuse. NRS are not legal experts and is unsure of the process of searching for you if or when your mom may decide to report to the police that you have ran away. Laws do vary from state to state. NRS like to inform you that running away is often considered a status offense. Once a run away report is filed the police will not actively search for runaway youth but will detain youth if contact is made and later contact a parent or legal guardian to make arrangements for youth to return home. In regards to your boyfriend and his mom, anyone that knowingly takes in a runaway youth and helps the runaway youth without parental/ legal guardian consent could find themselves in trouble with law officials(police) for aiding and a abetting a runaway. Your record of mental illness is most likely to be taking serious and is of major concern for immediate help to locate your whereabouts.
NRS want you to know that we are here as support to help you through this challenging time. We can best help by phone or chat as NRS is unable to respond more than twice by email or bulletin for assistance. If you would like to talk more in detail and share more about how we can help specifically, please contact our 24/7 crisis support line either by phone or chat.
Our contact information is 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929); www.1800runaway.org (click on the chat button).
If you are at risk of any danger or feeling unsafe, we encourage you to reach out to 911 or seek emergency assistance immediately.
We hope to hear from you soon.
Be safe,
NRS
