  • Running away to Va

I’m currently 16 and I want to move away from my toxic drunk mother I’m currently staying at my grandmas and want to live with other distant relatives in Virginia. Will I be in trouble if I run away to them? Will I be brought back to PA?

(If you are in danger for any reason, please call the police or go to your local emergency room.)

    Hi there,
Thanks for reaching out to us. We're sorry you're dealing with a toxic mom at home, and you have our support as you try and navigate your situation.

To answer your question: The best way to be able to stay with your distant relatives without it becoming an issue is to get permission from your mom to do so. If you choose to go somewhere without her permission, she can choose to file a runaway report with the police which means they will find you and bring you home even if you cross state lines. Although you won't be in any trouble with the police and running away is not a crime, you will have to face any consequences your mom has for you. Additionally, anyone over the age of 18 you are staying with could be charged with harboring a runaway, which is a criminal charge. One way to help prevent this charge would be to have your relatives call police as soon as you arrive at their house to let them know you are there and escaping a toxic situation. From there a CPS investigation would likely be filed.

If you are interested in learning more about how police might handle your case, you might consider calling your local non-emergency police line and explaining your situation without giving personal details. From there they should be able to tell you what might happen if you leave home/your grandma's without permission.

We would love to hear more about your story and give you more personalized advice. The NRS is here 24/7 via online chat or by calling 1-800-RUNAWAY. We hope to hear from you soon! Good luck!
