  • Emancipation Problem

So, I'm 17 and I want to be emancipated, but I have some questions. First, will I have to get my parents to say I can be? I'd rather not since they would just tell me no... Second, if I have a job, some money, my friend has a car, and I have a place to stay, could I be emancipated? I don't fully understand the process...

Hi there, thank you for reaching out. It sounds like you are wanting to get emancipated and have some questions about it. So we are not legal experts, but can definitely provide some legal aid resources that would be able to give you more direction on this. We do know that generally your parents would have to consent to it and that you have to be able to show you can support yourself. It can also be a very lengthy process and take up to 6 months. If you would like some legal resources or want to talk more about your reasons behind wanting to get emancipated, please call our hotline 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or chat us online at 1800runaway.org. We hope to hear from you soon.
    Be safe,
    NRS
