is it possible for me to apply for my GED even though I’m under 18? Or is there an online school that will give me a diploma and whatnot so I can apply? I can’t have a parent/guardian sign off on my GED plans since I’m running away. Most of them require that I have documentation from the previous school I attended but I just moved to florida and enrolled in my new school over the summer so it’s not possible for me.

In order to test for your GED in a state, you likely have to be a legal resident of that state. If you are running away from home, that would require you be accepted as a ward of the state you are moving to (meaning entering the foster care system of that state). That can be difficult if you are running away from home, and especially if your parents report you as a runaway. Additionally, if you are attempting to take the GED while under the age of 18, you need to have an official letter of withdrawal from the school you most recently attended.

As far as enrolling in an online school in your state to get your diploma, it may be possible. There are schools that congregate fully online you could potentially enroll in. You would need proof of prior education, your age, your residency in that state, as well as possible other documentation. It may also be difficult to enroll in a new school while under the age of 18 without parental consent.

These are not necessarily fields that we are experts in, but we are here to help as best we can. If you are able, you can live chat us at 1800runaway.org or call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY and we can discuss your situation in greater detail to find solutions more specific to your circumstances.
