  • Running away at 18 and I have a question

Hello, I’m an 18 year old gay trans man. I was neglected and abused (mentally/sexually) growing up and I tried to run away once before and was brought back causing the abuse to get worse. I wanted to provide some context so it made sense when I said I’m deeply afraid of running away again. I have a lot of obligations I need to get to like psychologist and therapy appointments for my extensive mental health issues. I’m wonder if my parents can file an alert saying I am a danger to myself and can take me back when I run away again? I have a safe place to go along with a therapist I’m working out a plan to get back on my feet with. Thank you so much for listening and possibly helping I’m so thankful to everyone running this forum for helping me!

    Hello,

Thank you for contacting National Runaway Safeline. We appreciate you reaching out and sharing what has been going on. It sounds like you were neglected and abused growing up. You do not deserve to be treated that way. We are here for you 24/7 and want to make sure you are safe.

If you are feeling unsafe at all, we encourage you to reach out to 911 or seek emergency assistance immediately. Also, you have the right to report any harm or abuse happening at home. We are not experts on the issue, but generally once you report, social services will investigate. If you feel like this is an option you want to explore, you may find this website helpful: https://www.childhelp.org/child-abuse.

As mentioned, we are not legal experts but want to share that the age of an adult in most states is 18 years old. Since you are 18 years old, you would be considered an adult. In most states, you can leave home without your parent/guardians’ permission.

We are here to help through this challenging time. If you would like to talk more in detail please call or chat soon at our website https://www.nationalrunawaysafeline.org/ .

Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
