  • Thinking of running away

I'm 17 years old and thinking of running away. For almost a week now my parents (mainly my dad) and I have been arguing over a certain problem and last night things got out of hand to the point that he threw a ball at my face and it hit me. This is the first time he has done anything like that but he always calls me stupid and makes me feel like a failure and my mom always sticks up for him. I've had enough and seriously am considering running away.

A response from the National Runaway Switchboard. Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Switchboard. It sounds like you have been going through a difficult time lately. We are sorry to hear that your dad has been putting you down. Nobody deserves to be put down like that. We can imagine that it must be very hurtful when your dad says that stuff to you. It sounds like things have been escalating between and your parents.

Somethings to think about are where would you go and how would you survive. Here at the Switchboard, we can try to help you and your dad sort out your issues by offering to do a conference call with you, your dad, and someone from our hotline. You mentioned that you dad threw a ball at you. What kind of a ball was it and did it leave any marks on you? If there is abusing going on we can also help you file an abuse report. If you do decide to runaway we can help find shelters for you as well. If you would like to discuss your situation further please give us a call at 1800-RUNAWAY.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.

It was a big rubber ball and no it didn't leave any bruises. He says I deserved it but no one deserves to be hit in the face with a ball.

          Re: Thinking of running away

so I haven't ran away yet. I wanna runaway but I know if I do and go to a shelter they will call my parents and I will get sent home. I..I can't stay at my house. The longer I stay here the more I have to suffer. My dad hasn't done anything else but I'm still afraid the next time he gets mad he will because to him I can't do anything right.

I'm sorry to hear that you're still having such a tough time with your family. Have you spoken with your dad since the incident with the ball happened? Have you talked with anyone else about what happened? I know you keep mentioning that you still want to run away, have you though about what you would do or where you would go yet? If you decided to stay at home do you think there is anything that would help in this situation? I know we mentioned this before, but if you ever want to call us here at 1-800-RUNAWAY we are hear to listen and help you generate some options that may help. We are a completely confidential line and here 24 hours a day. Good luck with everything and give us a call if you need to.

              Re: Thinking of running away

Hay . I have thought about runing away more than once and have ran aways over 5 times. There is a problem though I always get caught. Mi parents abused me and lied to SSD about it. They drink do drugs and stay that way most of the time. It has been hard on me 2. So I get where you are comming from. I wanted to tell you that no matter what happens to think of ways to support yourself. Its not as easy as it looks. Everyday I plan on how im goin to run away and still havent fount the key. Sometimes I wonder if I should talk to them then I think NO there not going to listen. I am adicted to drugs, sex, suicide all kinds ogf things and I still cant get out of it. I want to leave too but, just dont no HOW!
