    Hi there,

Thank you for taking the time to contact us here at NRS. It sounds like there is a lot that you are faced with at home and you feel leaving might be your best option. It seems that you want to know more about runaway laws.

18 is usually the age you are able to leave home without permission. However, as you mentioned Michigan is different in that in most cases you can choose to leave home at 17 and will not be considered a runaway by the police. Because we are not legal experts, we cannot say for with 100% confidence if going out of state would change how police would handle your situation. We suggest that any youth who is curious about their state or county's runaway laws contact local law enforcement through a non-emergency number or speak with a legal expert. If you are call our hotline at 1-800-RUNAWAY or use the live chat at 1800runaway.org, we would be happy to refer you to a legal aid resource in your area.

We are available for immediate support by phone and live chat if you would like to talk more!

I know you can legally move out of your house at 17 in Michigan, but can you move out of the state or do you have to stay in Michigan
