I am 17 years old turning 18 in 3months. My girlfriend turns 19 , 13 days before my 18th. My mom has threatened her with the police because she does not accept that we are a lgbtq couple ):
Is my girlfriend in risk of police if my mom were to call them on her ? We are just dating. However, we plan on moving out together once I turn 18 which I know we'll both be safe legally. But im scared that my mom will call the cops on her while im 17.

    Hey there,
Thanks for reaching out to us here at the National Runaway Safeline (NRS). It takes great courage to reach out, and we are here to help you in any way we can.

You said that your mom threatened to call the police on your girlfriend because she does not accept you as a couple. That must be very frustrating and upsetting. We are not legal experts here, but if you are concerned about consent, Sex, Etc., is a helpful website that outlines laws in different states. You can go to https://sexetc.org/action-center/sex-in-the-states/ to see what the consent laws are in your state. They also outline lgbtq+ laws per state, which might be of help to you as well.

It sounds like you feel safe in your relationship with your girlfriend, and it is exciting that you plan to move in together. It can still be hard to feel like you are not accepted by your mom. In case it might be of help to you to talk to others who may have been in similar positions with their parents, the GLBT National Youth Talkline is a great resource. Their website is http://www.glbthotline.org/youth-talkline.html and their phone number is 1-800-246-PRIDE (7743).

If you would like to talk through any of what we discussed above or if anything else arises that you would like to talk about, feel free to call into us here at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or use our chat feature on 1800runaway.org. We are a 24/7, completely confidential safeline. Here to listen, here to help.

    Best of luck,
    NRS
