Re: legal
Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Switchboard; we know that it can be difficult to reach out to people when you are having a tough time and we’re glad you contacted us.
You said that you wanted to leave home to forget negative influences like your family. What’s going on with your family that you want to leave?
We aren’t legally trained here so I can’t answer your questions specifically. I can answer them generally though. You can call the local police department and ask them for more specific answers pertaining to what they do about runaways. They would also be able to tell if they would stop looking.
First off, running away isn’t illegal; it’s a status offense, or something you can’t do because you are under the age of 18. It doesn’t go on your record and if the police were to find you, they would just take you home.
We are available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week if you have any other questions. Please call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY. We look forward to hearing from you!
~NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
