    Hi,

I need to move out of my house and I told my parents I would leave if they didn’t stop and they haven’t stopped. I have a really good job and I found an apartment I can rent. Including utilities, food, rent, a new phone and extra for an emergency I have enough money to last me till i’m 19 at which point i will definitely be able to get a better job. I live in Baltimore, Maryland and I’m just wondering what the police will do to look for me and how I can avoid being taken back to my parents.

    Thank you.

    Hi,
Thanks for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. We are sorry to hear that your parents are not treating you the way you deserve to be treated, and we are glad you have made a plan of action.
It sounds like you are feeling confident in leaving home, but you are concerned about how the police might react to the situation. From your post, it is clear that you understand the actions police generally take when a minor is reported as a runaway. Every case is different, however, and sometimes the police will be more lenient with 17-year-olds. One good way to find out how your local police may respond is to call your local non-emergency sheriff department and ask anonymously. This can be found with a simple internet search including your county name, or if you call us, we can find it for you. Our number is 1800-RUN-AWAY.
Of course, if there is any form of abuse happening in the home, this can be reported, and if validated by an investigator, you will not be made to return home. You can learn more about abuse reporting by reaching out to Child Help at 1-800-422-4453. Keep in mind, an investigation will not likely result in your ability to live independently. As a separate issue, that result may be achieved through emancipation. If you are interested in learning more about emancipation, we encourage you to reach out to us at any time.
We hope you find this information helpful. If you need anything more, we will be here 24/7 to help confidentially. Stay safe and strong out there.
    Sincerely, NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
