  • Im 16 and feel trapped

I want to runaway, im 16 and my home life is very stressful. They dont hit me but living here has made my mental health get way worse. They give me constant punishments, my mom, dad,and two sisters are always fighting with me and my sisters call me names. They are both over 20 and should not be acting like that with me. They have caused me to self harm and think about suicide. I just want to get out they invade my privacy on my phone and search my room trying to find something bad to punish me more. They do not let me go out with friends anymore and i feel isolated and lonely and tired all the time, my grades are bad because of my mental state. I evn told my sister i was sad and she just told me i was trying to manipulate her. They always make me feel like everything is my fault. I want to leave so bad but if i go to my friends house they could be charged with harboring a runaway so I am stuck here.

Thanks for reaching out to the NRS! It sounds like there’s a lot going on at home, but we’re really glad you reached out to us! It’s great to hear you’ve been doing some research and planning how to keep yourself safe and where you can go. We do have a database of resources we could refer you to. You might also consider a local Salvation Army and they could help you find a shelter to stay. You could also text the National Safe Place at 69866 (text the word SAFE and your location) and they will respond back with safe places to stay. If you’d like to call us, we are happy to chat further with you about your specific situation and help brainstorm some options of where you can stay to keep safe.
You mentioned self-harm and thinking about suicide. Your safety is our number one priority, and we are always here 24/7 to talk about what’s been going on at home. You can also reach out to the National Alliance for Mental Health (NAMI) at 1-800-950-NAMI, or contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-8255. Again, thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. It can take a lot of strength and courage to ask for help, and we’re glad you reached out. You can call us at 1800-RUNAWAY, or chat with on our website 24/7. Best of luck!
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
