• im 18 && i ranway from a program.

im currently 18 years old and i was 17 when i ran away.
i didnt run away from home but from a government program that did not help with nothing except fight more with my parents and they would punish me with no home passes if i would come to the program late and my parents did not live near the area they lived about 1hr and half from there. i also wasnt feeling confortable within the program. i been gone since feb. and i was in my last year of school and im also in probation..& i have a warrant from my my question is if return what would happend can i be charged as an adult or juvineil??..
&& if i tell them i want to return to school if would help me.?
ive been gone away from my parents for awhile & im scared to return that they might give me jail time for along time...i heard you can get locked up for 7 years for runaway is that true..?

Re: im 18 && i ranway from a program.

Thanks for posting on our bulletin boards. It sounds like you’re trying to figure out some of the legal consequences for your situation right now. We’re not lawyers here, so we can’t give you specific legal advice or the exact consequences. What is it that you were on probation for? Do you know what type of warrant you have? Have you been in touch with anyone from the program or your probation officer? Do you think any of them could provide insight as to the possible consequences? As far as being charged as an adult or a juvenile, we don’t know the answer to this question. Likely it would depend on what you were being charged with. Along with this, usually running away doesn’t put people into jail or juvenile detention. What generally happens when a youth runs away is the police return the youth back home, but once the youth turns 18 the runaway report goes away. However, since you were already on probation and have a pending warrant, there could be more consequences. It’s understandable that you would be scared to return home when you haven’t been there in a while and are scared of what might happen. If you want help calling your parents or your probation office (PO), we have a conference calling service here. The way it works is you would call us, and talk to the liner (person that answers the phone) about what’s been going on, your fears, and what you want to talk to your parents/PO about. The liner would then call your parents/PO, and explain that there is something you wanted to talk to them about and that NRS’ role is to be a mediator. We would then bring all three of you together. One benefit to doing a conference call is that we’re completely anonymous and confidential so we wouldn’t know where you were calling from unless you told us. Your parents/PO wouldn’t be able to track where you were either. Another benefit is that with us as a mediator we can ensure that both of you get a chance to speak and be listened to. We also don’t allow any yelling, profanity, blaming, etc. The conference call is meant to be a way to open the lines of communication and be a positive conversation. If this is something you’re ever interested in, you can call us here anytime. The number is 1-800-RUNAWAY. We’re available 24 hours a day, so whatever time you think would be best to call your parents/PO is okay with us. Even if you don’t want to do a conference call, you can still call us. We can talk more about the situation, help talk about options and possible consequences, and help you come up with a plan of action you’re comfortable with. We could also provide you with legal resources in your area if you wanted to find out more about the laws and possible consequences. Someone is always available to take your call, so call anytime.
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
