I am 16 years old soon to be 17 in a week or so. I live(d) with my dad, step mom, step sister, and full sister in South Carolina. My father has always been a very opinionated racist. He constantly chases my sisters and I around the house screaming vulgar things about the BLM movement and the protests. I finally got tired of it. One night, a few days ago, I recorded him screaming “black lives don’t f******g matter” and posted it on facebook for the world to see how horrible he is and what I have to live with. Then my sister and I decided it would be funny to write BLM on little pieces of printer paper and scotch tape them to the mirrors and walls around the house and my dad car windows while he was sleeping. He woke up and started ripping them down screaming about how we vandalized his house and car. He told my to pack all of my s**t and go to my moms house in Georgia, another state. They have joint custody and my sister and I visit my mom every other weekend. I really don’t want to be here because the living situation is not ideal because I don’t have my own bedroom and the schools aren’t great. I wanted to graduate from the high school I started from. What do I do? Is this even legal? Can I report him?

Hi there, thanks for reaching out. Sounds like you have been through a lot with your dad lately. It was brave of you to take a stand against that kind of hatred. It's unacceptable that he said those things. Here at NRS, we truly want to be a support for you during this difficult time.
We are not legal experts, but generally speaking you do have the right to report your dad for neglect if he kicks you out without setting up an alternative living arrangement for you. Since he is planning for you to stay with your mom, it does not seem like neglect at this time. You do have the right to report any suspected abuse or neglect to CPS though. If you are interested in reporting you might reach out to the experts at Child Help to see what could happen in your situation: https://www.childhelp.org. If you are not receiving any help from your parents with getting to your mom's and you are stuck outside, that is when you might be able to report. Please do not hesitate to call or chat us at 1-800-RUNAWAY or www.1800runaway.org if you would like to talk through your reporting options or shelter options for the night.
Here at NRS, we are concerned for your wellbeing and truly want to help. Please call or chat us so we can best help.
Take care,
NRS
