  • Could I move in with a friend without letting my parents and their parents know?

My family is extremely emotionally abusive. I would rather not go into detail but, I have a friend I’d like to move in with but I’m pretty sure neither of our parents would be supportive of this. I have enough money to buy a train ticket to get there but I am afraid of wether it’s legal or not. I want to get out of my home as soon as i can but i don’t want my friends parents or myself to get in trouble with the police. Could I move out without telling my parents or my friends parents?

    Hello There,
Thank you for reaching out to The National Runaway Safeline, we are here to help and here to listen. It sounds like you are going through a really difficult time right now, and we want you to know that you are not alone.
Any type of abuse is never okay and we are sorry you are going through that. You do have the right to file an abuse and there are a few ways you can report this. One option to consider is to call Child help at 1800-422-4453 and they would be able to help you with filing a report. Another option to consider would be to contact us and we would be happy to help you in filing a report. If you are ever in immediate danger please call 911.
You mentioned wanting to leave your house, we are not legal experts but we do have some information on the laws. If you were to leave home without permission your legal guardian could file a runaway report. I the police were to find you they most likely would bring you home. Whoever you were to stay with could potentially get in trouble for harboring a runaway which is usually a fine or a misdemeanor. If you would like to explore more options give us a call.
We hope that this information will be helpful to you in your situation. If you have any other questions or would like to explore more options please give us a call. We are here 24/7 to listen and to provide support. Best of luck!
    NRS
