  • I'm 16, almost 17 and I wish I could move out. help please (NJ)

I cannot deal living with my parents anymore. I'm turning 17 on July 1st. My parents are very toxic, possibly abusive (mentally/emotionally) and constantly yell at me and cause me to have panic attacks. And because they're home 24/7 now because of quarantine, it's even worse. Last school year my counselor called child protective services cuz I had said I didn't feel safe at home (which I still don't) and they came to my house and talked to me and my parents but they did literally nothing. and everything was a bit better for a few weeks, but now it's bad again like they never learned their lesson. and now they use that against me, saying stuff like "we can't even do anything or she'll just call CPS again." I'm scared to call again because my new school (I go to an alternative school now) is actually pretty cool and I like it there so I don't want to be taken away from there, and my boyfriend goes there too (although he's a senior, i'm a junior so if this quarantine lasts long enough he won't go there anymore), but even so I still like that school and I dont want to be taken away from him too and have to go like even farther from him (he lives like 20 min from me now). he's the first person in a while that i feel like accepts and supports me. anyways, i have no idea what to do. i hint at them a LOT that i want to be emancipated, but i need a better job and cuz of quarantine im not even working right now, but they probably just assume im joking. is there any way that after all this quarantine stuff is over that i'd be able to move out?? I'll be 17 soon but I can't wait a whole other year.

Hey there thanks for reaching out to NRS,
It seems like home is a hard place to be for you right now. It’s understandable that with your parents being home all the time that conflict would arise more. It sucks that CPS wasn’t more helpful the first time they were called, but its ok to still ask for help from them again. It seems like you may even be able to leverage that in talking with your parents for them to take it easy on you more if possible. If you do want to see your options with CPS and Child Abuse reporting you can go to childhelp.org for more information.
If you were to leave now, or at 17 then generally you are still considered a minor and under your parents guardianship. This means they can file a runaway report and have police bring you back home. Emancipation doesn’t always require parent consent and you might be able to start the process on your own by contacting your local courts or legal aid. Generally that varies by state but if you want more information on that you can call our hotline or reach out through our online chat.
Hopefully this information is helpful for you, if you have more questions or wanted more information please call our hotline at 1-800-RUNAWAY, or try our online chat at 1800runaway.org
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
