  • Leaving at 17?

Hi, I’m a 17 year old boy living underneath his grandparents roof since i was about 11 or 12. My Grandparents are very very good people and have a very substantial money income. I’m wanting to move out due to the fact that me and my grandparents really don’t agree on a lot of things. we argue a lot and it’s just very stressful. no abuse is done or anything like that. i just personally would like to be able to live on my own. my girlfriends mother would gladly take me in and i already work a job and can manage income.

Is there any way i could leave my house at 17 and live on my own?

My grandparents and me butt heads way too much and i feel as if it’s just ruining our relationship as a family. I feel like i’d be better off not to live under this household until i’m 18, and i know if i try and runaway that the law is going to be called.

    Hi there,

You mentioned wanting to know how you can leave home before turning 18. The easiest way to leave home is with your grandparents' permission. We understand that might be challenging, however, maybe there’s another family member, relative, or a family friend who could help to communicate how you’re feeling to your grandparents. The second way is through Child Protective Services if safety is a concern. Lastly, you can also look into emancipation options. In most states you need to be at least 16 to be considered and demonstrate that you can support yourself financially and independently. Emancipation often can be a lengthy process and may even cost some money for court fees. We would be happy to look into legal resources if that’s something you are considering.
