We’re not legal experts here, but generally speaking if someone leaves before the age of 18, their legal guardians would have the right to make a runaway report. If a report is made, and the police find you they typically would just bring you back home. However, anyone that the runaway stays with could potentially be charged for harboring. There are not typically differences in the way these procedures are carried out in regards to youths’ status, but rather different city/county/state and local law enforcement could make a difference in how they decide to handle the situation. One option you have is to call your local law enforcement and ask hypothetically what may or may not happen in this situation to get a better idea of how they would respond based in your area.

It's technically legal to run away if you are 16 or over, not 18.

Thank you for contacting us here at the National Runaway Safeline.It sounds like you are questioning if it is illegal to run away from home at the age of 16 not 18. We are not legal experts but to our knowledge running away is not a crime in any state but you are 18 it is not considered running away it is moving out. Running away is not a crime it is considered a status offence (something that only a minor can get in trouble for truancy, buying cigarettes, etc.) this means that if you have any interaction with the police they will simply return you home.
