  • 16 and I Don't Know Where to Stay if I Move Out

I'm 16 and I have been dreaming of leaving home for a while now. I live in California. I figured I'd just wait until college and never come back, but I can't wait any longer. My household is very chaotic and stressful. I already care for myself completly on my own at this point, and staying is only added stress. I am emotinally abused. I am willing to try to get emancipated and leave, but I don't know what my housing options are. I have a job that pays $14 an hour, but I'm not sure if I could afford a apartment here along with all the other living exspenses of being independent. Could I move states, and have my emancipation still apply? Is there other living options?

    Hello There,
Thank you for reaching out to The National Runaway Safeline, we are here to help and here to listen. It seems like you are going through a lot right now, and also seems like you are very independent.
You do not deserve to be emotionally abused and you do have a right to make a report. You can contact Child Help at 1800-422-4453, and make a report. We are not legal experts so we are not sure if the emancipation would process in another state. You can give us a call and we can provide you with legal aid numbers that would know more about the emancipation process.
We hope this information may be helpful to you in your situation. If you have any other questions or would like to explore more options please give us a call. We are here 24/7 to listen and provide support to you. Best of luck!
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
