  • over 18 and unable to get an ID

hello, i live in Pennsylvania and am over the age of 18, but my mother refuses to let me get an ID. i'm unable to save any money as anything i earn goes into a paypal which she often takes money that i had earned myself from, and i do not have access to any of my legal documents and am also unsure whether i need to graduate high school first to be able to get an ID
i also do not have anyone i can really go to, no close friends or other family members and i am unsure that even if i manage to get an ID and some money together if there is much i can do to find somewhere to go at that point
there are a few people i have met online who could be willing to help, but none are in a position to be able to atm, i just want to get out and i am not sure if i can deal with this much longer
if anyone at all can help me figure out what the laws are where i live for this sort of thing as i am having difficulty finding and understanding what is what and what i can do, that is seriously appreciated

Hello! Thank you so much for reaching out.

To begin with, you mentioned that you don’t have access to any of your legal documents, as well as your money. It sounds like you’re in a difficult situation right now, and we will try our best to figure this out with you together. It seems like the legal age in Pennsylvania is 18, and anyone under that age is considered a minor. Although it is important to finish school to get a high school diploma for any job, you don’t necessarily need to graduate high school before you can get a state ID.

Along those same lines, an option to consider would be to get maybe get the authorities involved. You’re may try to contact your local non-emergency number, and they should be able to let you know if an office can assist you with retrieving your documents if your mom will not get them. If you’re really looking to leave your home, and have no one to talk to about what is occurring, you can try looking up shelter in your area at the homelessshelterdirectory.org. You may also give us a call anytime at 1800) 786-2929, and we may provide you with further resources in your area.

Again, thank you so much for reaching out! You’re really brave for staying goal oriented through this difficult time, and we want you to know that you are not alone. If you need any additional help, feel free to give us a call at our 24/7 hotline at 1800) 786-2929. Best of luck!
