Re: 17 and wanting to move out
Hi – Thank you for reaching out to us. It sounds like your living situation is difficult and is starting to wear on you mentally. In Michigan, you become a legal adult at 18 and can make decisions for yourself about where you can live. It’s unclear from your message how close you are to 18 or what your living and legal situations will be when you are no longer a ward of the state. We aren’t legal experts but know that those factors will probably be important to consider. Regarding emancipation, that is one of the options but keep in mind that it has specific requirements which must be met. Given that you are already 17, it might not be practical due to the amount of time it takes the court to process as well as court fees.
If you’d like to discuss your situation in more detail, we’re here to listen and help 24 hours a day and 7 days a week at 1-800-RUNAWAY. We may be able to direct you to local legal or social services that can assist you. Please don’t hesitate to reach out. Good luck!
Thanks,
NRS
