  • 18 years old ward of the state

If i'm 18 years old and in dcfs custody, can they "force" me to be in a group home or residential?

I'm currently living with my boyfriend and his parents.

    Hi there,

Thank you for posting to our online forum. It sounds like you feel your boyfriend and his parents’ home is more supportive. In almost all states, the age of majority or the age you are considered an adult is 18. Only Mississippi, Alabama, and Nebraska have a different age of majority. Usually this means that you can decide where you live. Maybe calling your non-emergency police or a legal aid office would be able to give you more specific information about the law in your area. We can look up that information for you if you call our 24 hour hotline or chat with us online.

Please call us if you would like to discuss your situation in more detail.

    Best of luck,
    NRS
