  • My teacher is filing a report to CPS

I don't know what to do...my parents and I aren't close at all; it wouldn't be an understatement that they despise me. A week ago my dad slapped my face and said he'd kill me and I was seriously scared for my life... Both my parents are fairly bipolar but they work hard and make good money and we have no financial struggles. I don't talk to anyone at my house and every year my grades get worse—this year my GPA dropped to a 1.6. I don't know. I know some people have it worse than me and I can endure it, and my teacher is filing a CPS report on my behalf. What do I do? I want to leave more than anything but my parents will absolutely destroy me if CPS workers show up.

Hello and thank you for sharing a bit about your situation. It sounds like you’ve been through a lot lately and we’re incredibly sorry your dad slapped your face and said he’d kill you. It is understandable you’d be scared for your life and we hope you recognize you don’t deserve to be treated that way. You mentioned your grades have dropped and you don’t have anyone to talk to at home. Having your teacher file a CSP report sounds quite stressful so please know we are here to support you to the best of our ability. It can be difficult to know the outcome of a CPS report; however, usually what happens is CPS will first decided whether or not to open a case. If they open a case then an investigation will typically follow. If you are concerned of your parents reaction to CPS coming out to your home, perhaps your teacher could ask if they could meet at school.

Something else that might be helpful to keep in mind is CPS doesn’t always remove children/youth from the home. That does happen on occasion, but CPS sometimes offers other services first such as mandatory counseling, mediation, contracts, and/or parenting classes. We recognize how the uncertainty of CPS reporting can be difficult on top of the abuse and we are so sorry you’re having to go through this. You shared how some people have it worse than you and you feel you can endure so we imagine you are a strong person. However, we hope you recognize you don’t deserve to be abused and that you aren’t alone in your situation. We’ll be here if you want to try out our Live Chat.
