  • Moving out but scared about legal issues

I'm a 17 yr old transgender male living in Florida. Living at home has been a complete nightmare. I've fled home multiple times because of verbal abuse, claiming I needed a "break", but of course always came back home in fear of my parents calling the police. My therapists and psychiatrists all agree that I need to leave home when I turn 18 because home is just a toxic area. My boyfriends parents want me to move in with them. Our plan is for me to slowly start giving them my belongings as my birthday approaches, because we don't know how it'll go when I let them know I'm leaving.

I'm really worried about having all my ducks in a row before I leave. How does it work with my bank account? Do my parents get kicked off of it once I come of age? What about insurance? Will I basically be without financial help from our provider?

Basically, I was just wondering what legal things I need to put in place before I leave so that I'm not left stranded. Or what things my parents can withhold from me leaving me forced to stay with them.

    Thank you!

    Hi there, thanks for posting.
Sounds like things at home are really taking a toll. We are glad you reached out today.

You seem to have a plan in place as you approach 18, legal age in Florida. We are not legal experts, but can certainly provide you some local legal aid contact info if you reach out to us directly through phone or chat with your city and state. You can access our chat at the top of the page here or call us 24/7 at 1-800-786-2929.

We are here to provide support and talk through options. It sounds like your therapists and psychiatrists are supportive but your parents are making it very difficult.

We are here 24/7 to chat or call! Thank you again for posting today!

    Best of luck!
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
