Hello, and thank you for contacting the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you care a great deal about your girlfriend’s wellbeing.
Before answering your question, we should make clear that we are not legal experts. However, we are happy to share public information that may be relevant to your case, and connect you to a legal expert if you would like us to do so.
If a minor runs away from home, their parents may ask the police to bring them back home. However, in both Illinois and Ohio, someone over the age of 18 is free to live both wherever and with whomever that they choose.
Yet, as we’re sure you’re aware, running away is a big decision that comes with many considerations. Besides legality and the issue with school that you mentioned, some things you might have on your mind are living arrangements, food, clothing, work, and even things like relationships with friends and family.
If you or your girlfriend still have questions about anything, we encourage you to give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY. We are free, confidential, and available 24/7. We strive to give you the resources and support to make the best decisions for yourselves. Thank you again for contacting us, and we wish you the best of luck. Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
