  • I’m 17 and I don’t want to go to my dads

im 17 years old and my dad continues to over react to everything the other night I forgot we had dinner reservations and he said I was selfish, I got a bad grade and he called me weak, my mom has recently stood up and said she is staying at my house on a week I am supposed to be with him but my mom is afraid he will call the cops if he does what will happen? And is there anyway I can decide to just live with my mom full time without going through a custody battle

    Hey there,

Thanks so much for reaching out and sharing a little bit about what's been going on, we know that it takes a lot of courage. It sounds like your dad is really rough on you, that must be really hard. We aren't legal experts but generally speaking, if you leave home your dad can file a runaway report and the police would return you to him. Since you are planning on going to your mom's (and it seems like she has partial custody), they may not make you return back to your dads. You can try contacting your local nonemergency police line (usually you can dial out to 311) to verify what local policy is. If you and your mom do decide to pursue full custody, unfortunately, it could involve lawyers and court dates. If you need assistance finding local legal aid groups you can check out https://www.lawhelp.org/find-help/.

If you’d like to go over what’s going on in depth, or if you’d like to explore other options that you may have available to you, please don’t hesitate to call us at 1-800-RUNAWAY.
