  • What to do when I want to get away but can't?

I don't get along well at all with my parents. My mom and dad split up about 12 years ago and yet they're living together. My parents think everything's a conspiracy and that its gonna be the end of the world. So my mom stupidly moved us from the town we've lived all our lives with all our friends & family to this really shady place and got herself into major debt from borrowing money to buy a crappy house here and a piece of property on top of a mountain that she's trying to move us to with no civilization.

Not to mention we've been here a year and she still doesn't have a job. And what little money we do have she spends on prepper stuff like powdered eggs and cross bows? On top of that they drink more often than not and they get in huge fights and turn very hostile.

My dad is the most childish, hypocritical, unsupportive, and rudest person I've ever met. His type of humor is "don't take anything seriously and it'll be funny. Oh, and be a colossal **** while you're at it". He doesn't even want to get a job because if he does he'll have to pay child support.

My mom is very, very emotional and takes a lot of her anger out on us. She gets upset over the stupidest things and it's like you can't even talk to her without her bringing up something about conspiracies or Donald trump. She's very single minded and irresponsible.

There's a bunch more I could get into, but I'll leave it at that.

I'm only 14. I have an older brother who's 23 and then I live with my 15 yr brother and my 10 yr sister and there's no one who we could live with instead. I want to set up my life for greater things, but my parents bring out the worst in me. I think if I have to wait it out any longer I'll go insane.

    What do I do?

    Hi there,

Thank you for writing to us through the National Runaway Safeline (NRS) forum. It sounds like you're going through a lot right now. You mentioned some different things that your parents have chosen for you and your family that you disagree with. It seems you are looking for ways to improve your life but feel limited because of those decisions made by your parents. It sounds frustrating, and we're sorry you're going through this right now. Sometimes seeking outside support from professional resources often helps. Perhaps someone at your school or a counselor may be a good start as far as bringing awareness to the issues at home. We cannot really say what to do as we do not know you or what is best for you. Although we may not have a direct solution or answer that you may be looking for, we are here to help sort through your options as well as listen and help in any way we can. If you would like to talk more about your situation or explore some options and resources please reach out to us here by phone or chat.

We look forward to hearing from you soon.

    Take care,

Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
