  • canadian born us citizen and leaving home

    Hi there...
I am a 17 year old from Saskatchewan Canada. I am a grandfathered us citizen, and thus free to move to the us, as long as I have a passport and my certificate of citizenship. My mom and I have an on off relationship; sometimes great, sometimes awful. However, she keeps telling me when we fight to get out of her home. I used to say no...but as she keeps saying it, I'm considering leaving. I can easily get a job. But the age of majority here is 18, so I can't get a apartment, lease, etc. I turn 18 next January. I'm not sure I can wait that long, but I'll live with it. But my biggest issue is regarding my birth certificate and certificate of us citizenship. I agreed to leave if she gives me those papers. She refuses. I can get the birth certificate since I have a driver's licence, but she has threatened to annul my us citizenship if I leave. Can she do that?
My fiance lives in Texas, so I need to get down there. I'm willing to wait until when I'm 18. Can you give me any advice concerning my situation? And can mom annul my us citizenship?

    Hello,

What it sounds like is that you have some questions about your legal rights as a citizen of Canada and a legal citizen of the U.S. Being that you are 17 and still a minor your mom may still have control over your citizenship. The only way to know for sure what your rights are in regards to that is to contact a local legal agency that handles citizenship issues. They may be different in Canada than they are here in the U.S. We aren't legal experts, but marriage could make things different as well. We can imagine what your going through is pretty frustrating. And we are here to help. We can't exactly give advice on what you could do, especially since you are in Canada. But we are happy to chat with your if you need support.

    Best,
    NRS
