    RE: Help

    Hello there,
Thanks for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline today. It sounds like there’s a lot happening at home and you’re sick of how you’re being treated. We want you to know that you matter! Sometimes we need to be reminded of this, but it is true. It must be really hard to keep that in mind when your brother gets treated differently than you, but we assure you that it’s true.

Sometimes running away may sound like the best way to escape a problem, but often it creates problems that you didn’t think of before. This isn’t always the case, but running away can be more complicated than it appears. Do you have a plan or anywhere safe that you might go? These might be some things to consider before making a big decision like leaving your home. There is also things like money and food to think about too.

We should mention that running away isn’t illegal, but if you left without telling anyone, your parents could file a runaway report with the police. This means that if the police found you, they could take you home. There aren’t any charges they could file against you, but it would meant that the police would be looking for you. Sometimes whoever takes you in and lets you stay with them could be charged with “harboring a runaway”, which can be a fine or even in some cases jail time.

If you wanted to call in here at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929), we could talk about all the different options that you have or you could just vent about what’s happening at home. Sometimes it helps to just talk about it with someone. We’re here for you and we’re here to listen.

    Stay Strong,
    NRS
