  • 12 and thinking about running

My mother and I fight literally all the time, so I can't live with her.
She doesn't give me any freedom what so ever and treats me like a baby. We haven't gotten along, EVER. Ever since I was younger, we've been fighting

Thank you for reaching out to us here at the National Runaway Safeline. It seems like you are going through a pretty tough time at this point in your life and we want you to know that we are here to listen and to help you in the best way that we can. From what you shared, it sounds like you are going through some pretty stressful times…so sorry to hear you and your mom fight all of the time and that you don’t get along.
You mention you can’t live with your mom anymore and are thinking about running away. We certainly admire your maturity level in considering your options and reaching out about it. We are not here to tell people what to do, we believe that you know your situation the best. That being said, there are some things that may be helpful to think through when deciding whether or not to leave home:

    • Do I have a place to stay?
    • What about school? Would I continue to get an education?
    • Am I going to be gone awhile or coming back in a few days?
    • What would I do for money? Shelter? Food? Transportation?
    • Who can I depend on if I leave home?
    • Do I have a safe, solid plan?
    • What is my plan b in case my first plan doesn’t work?
    • Are there things that could make things better at home?
    • Who have I reached out to about what can be done to make things better at home?

We want to let you know that we are not legal experts, meaning that we are only able to speak generally about your situation. In most states, because you are a minor, if a runaway report was filed, you would typically be forced to go back home. If this is something that you are interested in knowing more about, you are always able to contact your local police department and ask some general questions.

We hope that we were able to help you think a little more about your options and brainstorm some more with you, if you feel like you would still need some more support or go through some more options, please feel free to reach out to us here at 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) we are here 24/7. We also have a live chat service. We wish you the best of luck in whatever it is you decide to do and hope to hear from you soon.

Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
