From NY to NJ

I’m 19 years old and I live in New Jersey. My girlfriend is 17 Years old and lives in New York. She is continuously being mistreated, physical and emotionally. We got years together and her family for no reason hates me. i work and I am very well financially. I live with my mother and sister, our house is big enough for a few other people to live in. I want to bring her over to live with me, but I don’t know the laws about that, what could happen if we do that since she also wants to come live with me. Is it possible for us to do it without getting in trouble?

We understand it takes great courage to reach out, and we appreciate you sharing a little bit about what’s going on.
It seems there is a lot that your friend is faced with right now and you’re wanting to find a way to help them as they mentioned wanting them to possibly come to stay with you and your family.
It’s great that you want to support your friend especially since this time is probably quite difficult for them.
She does not deserve to be abused in any way and it’s not her fault that this is happening. There are laws to protect minors against abuse and she would be within her right to file an abuse report through the school or school counselor, the police or with child protective services.

This might be considered a difficult step for her so if she would like to talk it over she is welcome to contact NRS. We can walk her through the process and even file a report on her behalf. Having a space to vent and explore options may often bring out a solution previously not thought of.
Her leaving home without parental consent could result in her parent’s filing a runaway report with the police and she could be returned home if picked up. Also once a report has been filed any person known to have aided and or are harboring a runaway could face legal charges. We’re here to listen and to help.
