  • I'm 16 and want to move out of my dads and into my moms

I'm 16, I've wanted to live with my mom for years. My dad has always treated me different from my brother, he makes me feel unwanted. Last year he told me he would emancipate me because I was to much to handle. Am I allowed to move out without going through the court system?

Thank you for contacting the National Runaway Safeline.
It took a lot of courage to write us today so we want to thank you for sharing your story. It sounds really hard to live in a house where your dad is not treating you fairly. Everyone deserves to feel loved and wanted, especially from their parents. We are sorry that you have to go through this.

We here at NRS are not legal experts but we do want to share that generally speaking the emancipation process usually is a long and expensive one. Yes, there is a way to be legally allowed to move out with your parents’ consent, we cannot say definitively what it is because we do not know where you live. One great way to find out about this and also the emancipation process would be to contact your local legal aid. You mentioned that you wanted to live with your mom maybe that could be an avenue to explore.

Also one of the services that we provide here is our conference calling service, this is a service where you would call us and we would hold a conference call between you and your parents to talk about how both sides are feeling. We would serve as mediators, we are not here to necessarily choose sides but rather help come up with a solution that would make the situation at home better.
If you would like to try this or want us to find a legal aid for you please feel free to give us a call at 1-800-RUNAWAY
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
