  • Im 16 and live in DC, I need to move out of my house

I live in DC. How can I move out of my house? Right now I live with my sister, father and a family friend. Nothing is going on at home in terms of sexual abuse, physical abuse. ect. But there is emotional abuse. My father always targets me out when receiving punishments and always blames me. He's not like "You're Horrid" or anything like that, he's just always saying why I am the cause of the problem or how I may be the one to blame. We fight a lot and we've been through family counseling, therapy, ect. Our family has been through a serious divorce that got messy so we've been through the social worker thing and everything basically. But I feel odd in the house, I want out. My father and I fight a lot and he doesn't ridicule me in any way. Its just I feel like I'm being mentally hurt and ridiculed. I want out. My sister is also a huge problem. She's just not the person you want to live with. I don't want to be involved with the family and I need out. Im 16, there has got to be some type of way out. I love my father to death but I'm tired of living with them. Its mentally hurting me. The people in the house and I don't see eye to eye. I don't think we ever will. I need answers, How can I legally move out and live on my own or somewhere else and fast ?

    Hello,

Thank you for reaching out to the National Runaway Safeline. It sounds like you’re very overwhelmed with the things going on between you and your family.
We’re not legal experts here, but we can tell you that 18 is the legal age of majority in most states. Which means that if you are 16 years old, things like getting an alternate place to live or traveling can be pretty complicated. If you’d like to call and ask us about this, we can explore some options.
You mentioned counseling and family therapy. Have you addressed any of these issues you’re having with your father in that setting? If not, would you feel comfortable doing that now?
It can be very trying to feel like you don’t belong in your home, even more so when you love the ones you’re having a problem with. It probably took a lot to get you to the point of wanting to leave, so you’re very brave to come to us with your questions. Do you have someone, like a friend or a teacher to reach out to? Sometimes it can be helpful to get someone’s perspective that knows you but is outside of your home.
Good luck with your situation! Please feel free to reach out to us at our 24/7 hotline, 1-800-Runaway or on our live chat on this website if you need anything else!

    Best Wishes,
    NRS
Please remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
