I'm currently 16 and will be 17 in 6 months. I was curious as to what would happen if I moved out a month before my 18th birthday? Can I get arrested for running away? I don't see why the cops would make a big deal if I was to leave home a month before turning 18. Also if I did get caught would this be on my record and prevent me from getting into a very good college?

RE: Runaway
Thanks for contacting National Runaway Safeline. It is great that you are reaching out for information well in advance.
We are not legal experts here, but generally speaking being under the age of 18 can still mean that you need permission from your parent/guardian to move out of the house. This also means that if you leave home, without consent, your parents can file a runaway report and the police will then bring you back home. This is considered a status offense and should not deter anything regarding colleges. The age of 17 can be a bit of a grey area as to how the police handle runaway cases. It can vary by state, county, and even by police district.
If you are interested in learning more specific answer from a trusted legal authority, you can always call your local police department and ask hypothetically what would happen. You can also call our hotline 24/7 at 1800-RUNAWAY and we can also reach out to the police on their behalf.
Best Wishes,
NRSPlease remember you can reach us directly by calling our 24 hour hotline, 1-800-RUNAWAY (786-2929) or through our Live Chat.
