  • 17 year oldSon went to California

Hello, my son keeps telling me he is going to take off with his 18 year old son to California, we live in Missouri where you are considered a legal adult at 17, but I'm not sure in California, so I can't stop him. My question is, if he is picked up by cops for being a minor and got in trouble, will they send him home? Or will I have to come pick him up in Cali. I would do what I can, and drive there if I have to. But I'm a single mom and don't have a lot of money, “he keeps telling me that he will be OK. Not to worry and if something ever does happen that Cali will just send him home.

Thank you for writing to us here at the National Runaway Safeline.

We understand it takes great courage to reach out, and we appreciate you sharing a little bit about what’s going on. It sounds like the person you are concerned with may already be 18. In most states including California 18 is the legal age to be considered an adult. Therefore should he would have to find his own way home if need be; although it sounds like you would be willing to help in any way you can. We do understand your concerns and we want you to know that we are here as support. We can best help by phone or chat as NRS is unable to respond more than twice by email or bulletin for assistance. If you would like to talk more in detail and share more about how we can help specifically, please call or chat soon.
